Local Attractions & Activities

Local Area and Activities in Invercargill

Highly rated "must do's" include Burt Munro and vintage motorbike displays at E Hayes and Sons ('World's Fastest Indian' movie), Oreti Beach where part of the movie was shot, Bill Richardson Transport World and Motorcycle Mecca, Stirling Point Signpost (the South Island's most recognised southern point), Bluff Hill Lookout, Stewart Island (including Ulva Island, famous for its native birds and flora).

The newly recreated (temporary) Southland Museum is open for visitors in town,  View Henry and the other Tuatara's and their burrows outside at the old Southland Museum site, through the windows from Queens park. We are justly proud of the Tuatara display, as they are the world's only living relative of the dinosaurs.

The two Transport World facilities are world class. Every detail has been planned and themed, including the cafes, display rooms and the rest rooms (each one is different so make time to visit all of them!) There is plenty to interest everyone and men, women and children have all been catered for in the displays.

OPEN daily - Dig This - another Transport World Attraction with an adult-sized gravel pit and full sized heavy equipment (bulldozers, excavators) for all to play on.

A number of outdoor recreation areas like the Queen's Park and Golf Course can be found in the middle of the city, walking distance from your motel. The city is blessed with many scenic walking and cycling tracks. Splash Palace Swimming Pool is great for young and old or if speed is your thing, Kart City Go-Karts. Ten pin bowlers are catered for at Superbowl and the list just goes on. And there is great shopping in the newly built CBD!
